PHOENIX, AZ (September 2009) – Hill & Valley Bakery, the largest exclusive manufacturer of sugar-free and no-sugar added desserts in the United States, is donating a percentage of its product sales made at Bashas’ bakeries this month to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The funds will be used to support the ADA’s two “Step Out to Fight Diabetes” Walks on Saturday, Sept. 26. The morning walk takes place at 8 a.m. at Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, while the twilight walk takes place at 6 p.m. at Midwestern University in Glendale.

“Step Out to Fight Diabetes” is the ADA’s one-day signature walk event that raises money to help stop diabetes by furthering its mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

“There are nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States with diabetes,” said Pamela Bradshaw-Stone, ADA’s Valley of the Sun Community Leadership Board Chair. “More than 469,000 adults in Arizona are living with diabetes; 58% are in Maricopa County. In fact, one in three children faces a future with diabetes. This is a staggering epidemic that needs to be stopped.”

Hill & Valley CEO Scott Florence is especially passionate about helping ADA; his father suffers from diabetes. Florence is leading the charge to rally support from retail partners, customers and the community at large. “Our customers face this life-debilitating disease every day,” he said. “Hill & Valley believes in improving and extending their quality of life, so supporting the Phoenix Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes was a natural fit for us.”

According to Bradshaw-Stone, sponsors play an important role in raising money for diabetes research. “We’re thrilled to have Hill & Valley’s support,” she said. “Diabetes is a disease that kills more than 230,000 Americans each year. With help from partners and the community, we hope to one day find a cure for diabetes.”

“Step Out to Fight Diabetes” Walk Event Details
The ADA’s East Valley walk will take place Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. “Our morning walk will be Western-themed, and participants will take a leisurely walk through beautiful desert landscape,” said Nicole Johnson, ADA’s East Valley Walk Manager. “The three-mile trail also has a waterway reminiscent of the original Gila River.

The ADA’s West Valley walk will take place at Midwestern University in Glendale at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. “This walk begins at sunset and covers a picturesque route through campus,” said Brian Long, ADA’s West Valley Walk Manager. “The three-mile route is lighted with luminaries that people purchase in honor of someone with diabetes. This walk is one of the few twilight “Step Out” events in the country.”
